BLURB
Personal knight to Queen Blanche of the Kingdom of Lamarre. He's equal parts protector, weapon, strategist, and bad influence. Acts relaxed and carefree but prefers to solve all problems with violence and can never turn down a chance to fight. He's a mad dog posing as a guard dog, held on by a rapidly fraying leash.

PERSONALITY
bullet points for now because i'm trying to keep this short oh god
● On the surface, Alaric doesn't seem like a knight. He's almost always carefree and casual, often conversing with the queen like they're friends and only rarely using her title and the proper terms of address. This behavior extends to others as well - he tends to show respect only when absolutely necessary, and otherwise he treats everyone like they're old friends. While it can be charming, it can also be exceptionally grating when he's expected to treat people in power with better manners.

● Alaric's laid-back attitude stops the moment Queen Blanche is in harm's way - or even insulted. He's her personal bodyguard and he takes his job very seriously; he will always jump in to defend her, whether that's physically or just with words. He doesn't take kindly to those who look down on her and remains steadfast and fiercely loyal to her no matter what.

● Fighting in general is something that brings out a much more brutal side of Alaric. He loves fighting, and while sparring can be fun, he greatly prefers killing - and the risk of being killed. He takes a lot of pride in his combat abilities and showing them off is always a good time. Despite his love for murder, he isn't sadistic; he likes killing because he's good at it, not because he likes watching people suffer - he doesn't draw out his kills and finishes his enemies quickly.

● Ultimately, Alaric cares about himself and the people closest to him above all else. The exact order is usually Blanche > his mom > himself, but this is always subject to change depending on circumstances. (His mom isn't a fighter, after all!) While he's fiercely loyal and protective of those he cares about, Alaric is far more apathetic toward others; he cares about them if it benefits him to care about them, basically. Because Blanche cares about others, he does - but if left on his own, he wouldn't go out of his way to help anyone unless he thought they might be useful later.

● With that said, Alaric does care slightly more about commoners than nobles - in fact, he harbors a lot of hatred toward nobles. While he doesn't seem like the sort to hold grudges, Alaric absolutely does. What happened to his mother was unforgivable, and he loathes the entire Vernier family (and by extension, all noble families) for allowing this sort of behavior to become acceptable. He's seen first-hand what happens when nobles don't protect their lands and their people, and he can't tolerate it. While he can and will bend his knee to them, he loathes every minute of it.

● Part of this hatred stems from the fact that he looks very similar to Curtis Vernier, a legitimate son of House Vernier who is around his age. Alaric both despises how many people assume he's one of them based on their trademark looks he just so happens to share and he also sees it as a boon. He's used his appearance on numerous occasions to get information and get into places he shouldn't simply because he can rely on people assuming he's from House Vernier. While he never outright lies and claims to be Curtis, he simply acts like he is and they usually fall for it.

● Alaric is more manipulative and cunning than one would likely expect of the queen's attack dog; he's the sort to plan and consider things from different angles, but ultimately he can and will act on instinct when put on the spot. He tries very hard not to be rash, but in combat he is the very definition of it. His desire to prove himself and his bloodlust is an awful combination for trying to keep a cool head.

● What Alaric wants most is to be noticed on his own merits, not because he's mistaken for a noble. He's the sort of person who needs attention more than anything else - and whether that attention is good or bad doesn't matter to him. He wants to be known for his skills in combat, but it's perfectly fine if people are in awe of him or fear him.

HISTORY
bullet points for now because i'm trying to keep this short oh god
● Born of the short and ill-fated affair between Anneliese Thurn and Cornett Vernier, Alaric is the illegitimate child of one of the most powerful noble families in Lamarre. His mother was a servant of the house at the time and was kicked out once it was discovered she was pregnant. She settled in a small town far to the south where she raised Alaric on her own.

● Alaric's upbringing wasn't particularly special. He acted out a lot and often tried to run away; he hated life in that small town. He was angry and bitter at everyone including his mother; he was a hellion to raise and he put her through a lot of heartache.

● Eventually he settled down a bit. His mother finally explained the truth about his heritage and why he didn't have a father, and Alaric's absolute hatred for nobility truly began. The nobles ruling over the land weren't much better; their small town was often under attack and they had to defend themselves with very little help from the nobles, which is where Alaric learned to fight.

● He decided he wanted a better and more exciting life than simply remaining in the village, so once he was old enough, he hitched a ride with traders to the capital to enlist and become a knight. He trained as a squire for some time before properly entering knighthood at age sixteen. Over the next several years he saved money in an effort to move his mother to the capital.

● Alaric worked hard and did everything he could to make a name for himself as a knight. While his fighting style was often a bit brutal for the other knights, he was efficient and good at his job. He was eventually given the position as Princess Blanche's bodyguard, much to his surprise. Such a position was usually reserved for nobles, after all.

● Except it turns out that the position was supposed to go to a noble. Curtis Vernier - his half-brother and one of the legitimate Vernier heirs - was supposed to have the position, but Alaric looked so similar that they were mixed up. He didn't correct anyone about this despite his irritation, and began serving Blanche anyway.

● While things were a bit rough for awhile - Blanche often escaped the palace and went off into the capital, as well as her general dislike for her family and the appointed knights - the position was a good one. Alaric was finally able to move his mother to the capital and settle her in, and over time he won Blanche's trust and when it inevitably was revealed that he wasn't Curtis, Blanche insisted he remain her knight. He kept the position and still serves as her knight to this day.

● Of course, it doesn't end there. Blanche couldn't stand her family - and more importantly, she couldn't stand what her family was doing. The Lamarre family was responsible for several attacks on neighboring nations, with plans for more conquest and bloodshed as a show of power. Blanche and Alaric planned to kill her family and put Blanche on the throne - and they succeeded. Blanche murdered her parents and Alaric killed her siblings.

● For six months, there was relative peace. Blanche's bloody upheaval of the Kingdom resulted in most of the nobles looking at them suspiciously but otherwise bending a knee and listening for fear of having that might turned on them. While Blanche was simply one person, she did command the might of the army and those in the capital and the castle had her back entirely, believing in her dreams of peace. The country had entered a relatively stable period after the coup.

● That's when a massively powerful (and magical) storm hit the kingdom, spiriting away and killing people and ultimately leaving a much smaller population behind reeling at their losses. Blanche and Alaric barely escaped the castle only to set out in search of the culprit to put an end to the storm still blanketing the castle.

● Except somehow, they keep reliving the same moments over and over again, no matter how many times they die in pursuit of this...

POWERS
● Weapons. Alaric is both self-taught and trained as a knight; his fighting style typically is showy and exaggerated, but his strikes are always precise and deadly. He prefers swords, but he has some knowledge with just about every weapon he could get his hands on; even when he isn't trained with a weapon, he's pretty good at figuring it out quickly. Aside from swords, he uses knives frequently - he prefers throwing them as opposed to fighting with them, though.

● ??? Idk maybe he'll end up with some other powers someday who knows???
